have you heard of teaching your baby to read?

New Dr Titzer Your Baby Can Read 5-Volume Set DVDs
I was browsing thru ebay and found that set of dvds that assures the buyer that you can teach your baby (under 3-4!!) to read... Has anyone heard about it? Is it worth to spend $60 for it?
Thanks for your input

"Your child will see the words, hear the words, see images representing the meaning of the words, and often perform some physical activity related to the words. According to theories on brain development, this multi-sensory reading approach may help new synapses form among the visual, auditory, and somatosensory areas of the brain." (from their website)

Here's what it's going to teach your child -- sight words. So they aren't going to be able to sound out letters and put them together using phonics. But they would have a growing vocabulary and probably would be able to recognize words from books. This program just adds a step to what we already do with kids -- connect things with words. This just adds in the written word! So if you see a picture of a horse, call it a horse, and show the written word.

And I don't think it's unreasonable to expect a preschooler to be able to recognize sight words -- it's just that a lot of parents don't expect it so they don't really try it! I've seen preschoolers be able to do an incredible amount of stuff if just shown simple ways to do it. So preschoolers can do 2nd/3rd grade level math (i.e. 56-22) just by using their fingers. Same type of thing here, I think. Just because it's something they don't usually learn until "school age" doesn't mean a child can't comprehend it!

For me the money doesn't sound too unreasonable. It's about the same price as 5 Baby Einstein dvds. So if you would be willing to spend the money on those, then this might be worth it.

Just one thing, though (and this is my opinion), please don't let your kids get addicted to television! I think there is some danger in these educational videos for infants in that it gets them used to entertainment from the tv. And *you* can help them learn by spending intentional time with them on these things at an ealy age.

O.k. Done babbling now! But I hope that helps a little.

Thanks for the advice! and I agree with your opinion on tv addiction, but I was willing to overlook that if this product would give my kids an advantage.. which it doesn't sound like it... not anymore than me reading and working with them on the same subjects. thanks again
