Here's an idea that will not only make someone else's day but will also make you smile (a lot!) while you are preparing the surprise and thinking of the happiness you are getting ready to share.
Quite a few years ago goodie baskets were secretly making the rounds in my area and leaving a lot of happiness wherever they had been. The baskets were started by several good-hearted women (like us!) and included things like cookies, a small tube of hand lotion, a paperback book, an inexpensive seasonal pin: anything you think the recipient would enjoy. The basket does not need to be large nor does it need to be expensively filled. When your basket is ready, tie the poem (shown below) to it and
secretly give it away. Someone you know who is special is easy and fun to do but also consider (1) someone you don't know very well, (2) someone you don't particularly care for who just might improve when something nice happens to them (3) an elderly neighbor (4) me!

You can make more than one basket to get this idea jump-started in your area. This is a great and inexpensive way to spread some happiness.
Let me know if you follow up on this idea, any ideas for basket treats, and, if you happened to hear what the reaction of your basket recipient was, tell us!
"The Giving Basket"
This basket and the goodies
are especially sent your way,
To show that you're remembered
on this ordinary day.
When you've eaten all the goodies,
Please refill it for a friend,
And leave the note inside it
So the giving does not end.
The basket and the goodies
Will lift your spirits twice,
Once when you've received the kindness,
Then when you give it to someone nice!
