we have a playstation 2 and enjoy it. one plus to the playstation 2 is it can be used as a DVD player too, so it can play dvds on it and an added bonus. that is why we did that. playstation 2 can also play playstation 1 games too.
other then that i dont know much bout how it compares to others. we just liked that it could play dvds as well as games. good luck deciding!

Here's pretty much how I see it.. and this is pretty common thought in the video game world:
Game Cube: More animated game, less violence, geared towards kids. If you have kids under 14 this is definately the one you want. Playstation 2: Much more violence in most of the games.. not really cartoony at all. Games like Grand Theft Auto is what its been its money producer (and this game has got horrible press because of the violence in it). This is the system that all college students have and love and wouldn't trade it in for anything. They have the rights for several games exclusive.. and the game play on certain games (Sports games being one of the bigger genres) is a lot smoother. It can also play DVDs as someone mentioned (you can buy a remote for the dvd player, but you don't have to pay extra for the actual dvd player) Xbox: More for the hardcore gamer. Has a few games that have made it special (most notably, Halo) and it looks VERY VERY good. It has a built in harddrive so you don't have to buy a memory card and has a lot of upward compability with computers and the internet (it is afterall, a microsoft product). They charge for the online use though (which Sony hasn't done as much yet) so that is a hidden cost. You can play dvds on it, but you have to buy a dvd adapter thing, which is an extra 20 bucks (which is pretty much the 20 you save from the memeory card). If you have to ask this question, in my opinion, this system isn't for you. As far as price goes, they are all pretty similar. Xbox and PS2 games drop faster then Game Cube because they are cheaper to make (Game Cube has little tiny discs, Xbox and ps2 have normal cd/dvd size ones). Nintendo is always reluntact to drop prices on big sellers though, because EVERYONE wants games like Mario, no matter the price. So I think in the long run ps2/xbox are a little cheaper in this regard.. but its very little difference unless you're buying 10 games a month. In summary: If your kids are over 12-15 range, I'd get a PS2, if you're getting it for yourself, I'd get a ps2 unless you really like the Mario games If your kids are younger then 12, get a Game Cube. |
