Old Cell Phone & 911
I never realized this until I stumbled across this...
Effective December 1997, all cellular telephones are required to have carrier network access to make unlimited FREE 911 calls. Power up the phone. Dial 911. Select send and you will be connected immediately with the emergency dispatcher for 911. Here is a site to get a free old phone to use in an emergency. Link

Yes we do this too! we have one cell phone but sometimes dh has it at work, so if i am traveling with the kids i try to remember to take it with me just in case! its great to pass it along to others!

I never knew about this, I know some people who could benefit from my old phone. What a nice idea.
I also wonder if shelters for women and places like that would take them for donations for this use, a nice thing to check into.

There was a program to donate them to shelters for battered women. Not sure of the info though.

That is fantastic! Thanks so much for passing that along. I have forwarded to all I know so that all those old phones aren't wasted and can be donated or given to kids, parents, etc. for their emergency use. Cool!
