EBay plans to shut down Half.com subsidiary

That's the first I've heard anything about it. Too bad if they do. I prefer buying there than on ebay. I don't like bidding and waiting for someone to outbid me at the last minute, I like to buy what I want right at that moment. I'll miss them if they do shut down.

This actually doesn't surprise me because of the way ebay has recently been going. They have added quite a few features recently that are Half.com like. Basically they have more of the "Buy it Now" features that are the same cost as the auction based things. I know I use them quite a bit.

On top of that, ebay is actually cheaper then half.com on closing costs (which is the reason I've stuck with ebay as a seller)... as a buyer.. well.. I don't really buy much

Regardless, I think that you won't end up seeing much of a difference in the long run as people get used to using the Buy it now stuff.. which is pretty cheap from the selling end.. so a good deal.

Per Ebay Website:

Date: 03/06/2003
Time: 13:34:32 PST
***Half.com***

Half.com and eBay are dedicated to providing the best possible services to sellers and buyers. To that end, we are continuing with our plans to integrate Half.com and eBay. We began this integration process two years ago by first combining the customer service functions of both sites into one, and then with the integration of registration, User IDs and feedback. You can now use the same User ID on both Half.com and eBay.

While you shouldn't expect dramatic changes this year, in 2004 we will further combine the two sites until Half.com is fully integrated into the eBay platform. At that point, the Half.com brand and site will go away, and the Half.com functionality will be available within the eBay site. In the meantime, we will continue to build the Half.com business in order to provide you with the best experience possible.

We intend for this transition to be seamless and easy for sellers and buyers on both sites. Many of the details of how the transition will take place are not yet available. We will provide regular updates on the Half.com and eBay Announcement Boards before changes occur.

As always, thank you for your continued support of Half.com and eBay.

Regards,
eBay

Half.com allows you to list items without paying a listing fee upfront. Ebay doesn't. I'm not surprised that they would want to get rid of Half.com.
