Unhappy Bad weather bad news

We had ice overnight here and snow on top of it. Just found out my 6 year old grandson and his dad were in a car accident this morning. They hit ice and went into a telephone pole. My grandson is fine, (thank goodness for the booster seat law!) His dad was hurt, but thankfully had airbags so it wasn't too bad. Just a few cuts and an ambulance ride to the hospital. The car is totalled though. Just goes to show you that children should ALWAYS be buckled into the back seat of any vehicle and if they are small, they should be in a booster seat no matter what the law is in your state. Whether you buy a booster seat online, or B&M, PLEASE buckle your little ones up safely. My grandson is my whole world and I don't know what I'd do without him. I'm sure your children and grandchildren mean just as much to you. Don't think it can't happen to you because you just never know. I just wanted to share my story with you as a reminder to wear YOUR seatbelt and to buckle your children up safely and use a carseat or booster seat if they are small and the seat belt doesn't fit securely.

I'm glad everyone was ok Sue! I bet it was scary to get that phone call! I hope your weather improves, or at least that the road crews make the roads safe. Hug your loved ones and tell 'em you love 'em!

And I agree, everybody should be buckled up! NO EXCUSES!

Oh wow! I'm so glad they're okay. My daughter (6) asked just yesterday why she had to sit in the booster seat. I told her to get used to it, she's got at least another year to go (she'll be 7 in May). I'm holding out for 8/80 even though Maryland law I think is 4/40.

Sue - that is so scary. I am so glad that your grandson and his dad are okay. Hugs to you all!

It's so true that we all need to buckle up appropriately - even on the shortest of trips. My stepdaughter is great about her seatbelt, but her brother complains about having to wear one sometimes. Both my hubby and I have a rule - the car doesn't move until all seatbelts are buckled. And we stick to it.

Out in traffic sometimes I will see a mom/dad driving with a kid(s) roaming around inside the car - walking on the seats, etc. I cringe when I see this. If that car even taps something or if the parent has to brake hard - those kids will go flying inside the car and most likely get hurt. In an accident, they could be thrown outside the car.

Be safe everyone.

Glad everyone was okay and what a horrible ordeal to go through at such a young age.

Vickie, I too see how often parents here don't abide the law with strapping their kids in for the ride. Our law is 8/80 pounds and not very many practice it.

Drive safe everyone, here where I am in NY we are now getting an inch of snow an hour right now and it is expected to be like this all day. Here I thought the snow was to an end for a few weeks at least but we aren't getting a break at all.

Wow, Kathy - I know you guys get snow but it seems like you're getting tons of snow this season. Is this normal?

You need to come down here.....it's in the upper 80's already....and it's only March.

Take care up there and keep yourselves safe! Hugs!

I am glad they are OK....Here IN CA the law is 6 or 60 lbs. I think they are trying for 8 or 80. At this rate neither of my boys woudl be out of the boosters until they are 13.
My 8 year old is I think 52 pounds. and my 5 yr old is 47. shhez...
I have theh booter seats mainly so they will not be choked with the belts. That can be so very dangerous also.
BUCKLE UP EVERYONE!!!

The booster seat law here just went into effect a few weeks ago. It's up to 8 years old or 80 pounds. I just got home from taking my grandson back home, we had him here for most of the day. I saw the pictures of the car and it is amazing no one was seriously hurt. They were only going about 23 mph too when they hit the ice and went out of control. It's hard to believe that much damage could happen going that slow, but it did. He was pretty shaken up by it all. But physically, he's fine. I just had to go get him so I could hug him and see for myself that he was ok. He's a tough little boy.

{{{Sue}}} He may need a new car seat now. I believe you are supposed to replace a car seat after it has been in a crash. I am so glad eveyone is ok.

Yes if you're in an accident going any faster than 15 mph you should replace the car seat. I just talked to his stepmom and they're going out and buying a new one this weekend. Even though they don't have a car right now, she said she wants one so no matter who they ride with, he's buckled in a booster seat.
