Funny you should ask. I just had a conversation with my grandsons step-mom and she told me about a remedy she swears works. Said her mom used it on her, her grandmother used it on her mother, ect. It sounds really gross but she swears by it. Drink melted butter. Yep that's right .She said she melts some butter and drinks it and it coats her throat and makes her stop coughing when nothing else will. She also said it's extremely gross, but it works. It all depends on how badly you want to stop coughing. I have NOT tried it yet, but I haven't had a bad cough this year.

I've been using the kids's meds, Triaminic or Simply Cough. I hate taking meds! The Simply Cough tastes a lot better than the Triaminic LOL
Aside from that, I don't know. I'm almost willing to do anything to stop coughing long enough to fall asleep. I need a good night's sleep, but with this cough, doesn't look like it'll happen anytime soon.

Personally, I use Vicks Formula 44 when I get a bad cough. It seems to work best for me. We did get a free sample of this stuff called Buckley's that says right on their site "tastes awful, works great. " (they even admit how bad it tastes) It did work great but OMG it was so gross tasting I nearly threw up
I kid you not. It says it's sugar free and alcohol free. It was just the cough medicine with NO flavoring adding. I think I would rather cough than take that stuff. I just heard about the melted butter the other day so I haven't tried that yet, let us know if it worked for you and how bad it was getting it down. Here's the link for Buckley's if you want to try it, it works great but believe me it is enough to gag a maggot. Buckleys link (they also have a money back guarantee on their site if it doesn't work. You can buy it online or they tell you what stores you can get it at. I don't see the free sample anymore though)

Here's a simple idea that we use that helps some, but also combine it with some over the counter stuff. When I get a cold I always prop myself up on some extra pillows when I go to bed -- so I'm closer to upright, but still comfortable enough to sleep. He's probably coughing because of sinus drainage running down the back of his throat. Propping myself up seems to help things to drain better so I cough less.
If you can actually convince him of it, I'ld probably keep him on a decongestant during the day and then a cough suppressant at night. Hope my two cents helps! -Beth

I think I will try the brown sugar and pineapple even without a cough. I was unsuccessful in getting my husband to drink butter last night but thanks to all of your help, we’re set to try new things tonight … err, new COUGH remedies that is!
I had time today to research home remedies online and found several sites with suggested cures. The International Home Remedy Site had some interesting ideas for coughs and a couple of fast ones were: “Put a teaspoon of sugar in your mouth, swallow works instantly” “Slice a wedge of lemon and bite into it. Works very quickly” plus lots and lots of other ideas, as well as suggestions for earaches, sinus problems, headaches and almost every other ailment you can think of. As a frequent headache sufferer, I decided to check out that area and be ready for the next headache. There were some really good ideas that I definitely will try when needed but I have to tell you, I question the validity of others…for instance some guy named Adam Hughes wrote: I've had migraines for 3 years now. I've found that if you rub peanut butter on you genitals the headache will usually subside in about 6 hours. always works for me. OMG, Just thinking about that today and the possible consequences (he’s driving…an accident…emergency room thoughts?) has given me lots of smiles & chuckles; yep, there's all kinds of folks out there! Another site I liked for not only aches/pains remedies but for solutions to everyday situations was Simplitudes Again, THANK YOU to all for your ideas---hopefully these will help lots of us! |
