It will obviously depend on how big the baby is at birth, but most recommend only 1 package of newborn size - most hospitals provide diapers while the baby is in the hospital.

Some kids are born at 10 pounds! My daughter was 10 pounds at about 4 months old.

I agree - it depends on the baby! My daughter had a tiny little butt even though she was 6 lbs 13 oz and wore preemie diapers for a week and then newborn for a month. My son wore newborn diapers for two weeks and now wears a size one. I'd start with a pack or two and then see how the diapers fit. By the way, See the front page CVS diaper deal for a good deal on diapers - even the newborns!

KMart also sells generic diapers in the newborn size for a significant savings over Huggies or Pampers.
If you choose to stock up on newborn sized diapers, get them some place you can exchange them for bigger ones if the baby grows out of them.
