Database creation help

OK - question for all you programming gurus.

I'm creating the web site for our junior football organization. We've got about 450 kids (if you include the cheerleaders). What I'm trying to do (unsuccessfully at this point) is create a simple database that will hold their registration information. I'd like to make it searchable and also have the ability to pull selected records (i.e. Varsity Team, 10 year olds, Returning players, etc).

Now the tricky part - I know just enough SQL to be dangerous - but certainly not enough to pull this off from a programming standpoint. So - I'm looking for a database template program. Something that I can download into our site directory, and then view, search, and modify online. Built-in password protection would be a plus, but not necessary - I have a password protection script I can use if need be.

I know they exist - I've seen several on Tucows - but narrowing them down into something that will fit our needs is something else - just because it's rated highly doesn't mean it will suit our purposes. Like I said - we only have about 450 kids to keep track of - and we are a non-profit, so we can't spend much money on a developer's license for some fancy program. I just need something that's clean and simple (a lot of non-technically oriented people will be using this). I'd prefer freeware, but a modest shareware fee wouldn't necessarily be out of the question.

Any advice is much appreciated!

Thanks!
