DSL service
Tell me about your experiences. It looks like I can either get 768Kbps access through my phone company (SBC ameritech) or DirectTVDsl (directvdsl.com) for $50/month. I've got a coworker who has the directvdsl and likes it. Is this really fast enough? (I assume it is, I'm running at about 38Kbps thru dialup.)
I have several phones in my house, and I've heard about the DSL filters. Does this seem to be a major hassle to anyone? I also have a SMC7004ABR that I'd like to use to share access between 4 windows PCs, let me know your experiences with using a router to spread access. Don't try to talk me into getting cable, I don't have cable TV and the amount is outrageous ($85/month) to get it if I don't subscribe. Thanks in advance for any advice. |

My DSL service is sort of through SBC. (Its a private DSL line that uses SBC's network but pipes my connection to my work's Internet link, so I get to use my work Internet access from home). I think either SBC or DirecTVDSL is probably fine.
What I can tell you is that the in-home splitters do work ok. But if you have the option, you should split the DSL off outside the house, and run a dedicated DSL line to the DSL modem. That way you don't have to worry about interference (I've done tests and if you have any problems with your house wiring you WILL experience much slower speeds), and will generally get the maximum speed possible from your connection. The router is the best way to share the connection between computers too. |
